Welcome to second grade in Room 227. Second grade is an exciting year when children really grow as learners and citizens. When the doors open on September 8th, your children will be Earl Shapiro Hall’s oldest learners – they will now be the big kids in the building! We can’t wait for them to explore, wonder, imagine, play, laugh, construct, and learn in this wonderful space. It’s exciting to think about all the new traditions and memories we will create together. My name is Lisa Harrison and it is my pleasure to welcome a new group of children and families to my classroom for the 18th time. Joining me will be Ms. Atiya Hamilton. Atiya has been my teaching partner for the last two years and we are both looking forward to the new school year.
This is the first of many newsletters that you will receive throughout this school year. There is always something happening in our classroom and not enough time or space to include it all in a weekly newsletter. To keep you informed, we will also post regularly to a classroom blog, class Twitter account, and we will use Evernote to share learning portfolios with you. Upon receipt of this letter please follow this link (http://goo.gl/forms/4fXmtXvDpH) to share your contact information and complete a brief technology survey. Once we receive your contact information we will begin communicating with you about our classroom and the beginning of the year.
We have a busy schedule in second grade. Everyday, please send a healthy snack substantial enough to keep your child’s energy up until lunch. A microwave is available but we ask that you vary your child’s lunch (hot/cold) to lessen the wait time. Your child should be able to manage his/her snack with relative independence. Children should also bring a water bottle with a flip straw/lid or sports cap to prevent spills (no screw tops please).
Our classroom door opens at 8:10 a.m. and school begins at 8:30 a.m. everyday. You are welcome to spend the first 10-15 minutes in the classroom helping your child get settled on the first day of school. Your child will have Music three days a week, Art two days a week, Library twice a week for book check-out and story, Computer once a week and P.E. four days a week. Don’t forget those gym shoes! More details about our routine and schedule will be sent home the first week of school. Please save the date for Primary School Parent Night on Wednesday, September 16th at 5:30 p.m. We look forward to sharing details about our curriculum and the year ahead.
We can’t wait to meet you and your second grader! Please complete the attached parent survey and mail it to me at ESH or return it the first week of school. Also, please send in a framed family photo to school on the first day of school (4 x 6 tabletop frame please) to help us build our classroom community. Divorced parents are welcome to send in two photos (one with each parent). If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at [email protected].
Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you soon!
