HAPPY NOVEMBER!
Despite our short week of school, it was a week filled with excitement and fun. We had a terrific field trip to Lincoln Park Zoo and our guide, Mary, taught us a lot about gorillas and chimpanzees. See if your second grader can remember one of the differences between monkeys and apes. We never did see the new baby gorilla because she was snuggled in with her mom, Bana, on top of a tall platform. The baby's silverback dad, Kwan, sat up from a nap to make an appearance. We also enjoyed watching a group of young male gorillas chase and play with one another in a separate enclosure. Thanks again to Reese's mom for organizing this great trip. It was a lovely was for use to connect to our read aloud, The One and Only Ivan.
Halloween was an event to remember! Thanks to all the parent volunteers for making our celebration so magical. Nathan's dad took some great photographs to capture the day. We returned from recess to find the classroom decorated and treats waiting for us on the desks. Be sure to see the Gallery for the latest photos. If you have more photos to add to the Halloween album, please send them in on a cd or flash drive (medium or large size photos please).
FINAL SCHOOL PICTURE ORDERS DUE NOVEMBER 12th
November 12th is the last day to turn in school picture orders, including retakes. Orders can also be placed online but there is a $10 convenience fee. After November 12, orders must be placed by parents directly with Picture Day and will incur a shipping fee and be mailed directly to your home. First round photos orders should arrive before Thanksgiving. Print orders placed by November 12 should be delivered to before Winter Break.
WHOOPING CRANE UPDATE
Goodbye Illinois! Early this morning all five Whooping cranes departed Wayne County, Illinois with today’s lead pilot Brooke Pennypacker and after an hour of flying they landed safely in Union County, Kentucky. On November 1st, weather conditions were favorable enough for the cranes to skip a stop and fly 119 miles! The cranes have now flown a total of 453 miles in their 1,101 mile journey! Whoopee!
CHANGE 4 CRANES FUNDRAISER
We are getting ready to launch our Change 4 Cranes fundraiser before the Thanksgiving Holiday. We are asking each family to send in a sturdy container from home that we can reuse as a donation container. In our effort to “go green,” we do not want to purchase new containers and are hoping to reuse containers you would be recycling to throwing away. Some ideas include 24 oz. yogurt tubs with lids, oatmeal cylinders, plastic baby wipes boxes, etc. Containers need to be able to keep coins and paper money secure. We have Change 4 Cranes decals to decorate our containers. Please send in as many as you can. We need them by Friday November 16th at the latest. Thanks for you support. We'll give you more details as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.
Enjoy the weekend and don't forget to turn your clocks back!
