Our field trip to the maple sugar bush was terrific and the weather was just right. On our trip, we went back 400 years in time and traveled forward to present day to learn about how the Potawatomi Native Americans, the pioneers and the Chellburg family made maple sugar and syrup. The sap was running and we got to try a taste right from the tree! We also enjoyed a hike into the woods, saw a couple of deer, explored the outside of the buildings at the Bailey Homestead, and played in the foot-deep snow. We really enjoyed taking our classroom outdoors! Please enjoy the photos in the Gallery. Thanks to our parent chaperones. If you took any good photos, please send them to Ms. Harrison.
We will be working on using the photos from our trip to make an iBook for the iPad. As soon as we have our iBook finished (sometime after the break) we will send you a copy to view on your own iPad or apple device or as a pdf document. Stay tuned....
NOTES HOME
On Friday, your child brought home two notes stapled to his/her finished work packet that need to be returned this week. One was the Gym Show permission form. Please return this tomorrow if your child plans to participate in Thursday's evening performance or email Ms. King [email protected]. The show begins at 6:15. The P.E. teachers need to have an accurate count to plan for Thursday's show.
The other note sent home included a letter describing a study on moral development being conducted by post doctoral researchers at the University's Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab. If you agree to have your child participate, please complete, sign and return the TWO forms by the end of the week. Thanks for you support!
FAMILY MESSAGE LETTERS
Because of our field trip on Thursday, the children did not have time to write their family letters last week. Please look for the green folders in your child's backpack on Monday. Please reply and return the folders before the end of the week. We want to make sure they have all been returned before Spring Break.
ALVIN AILEY FIELD TRIP
We are set for Friday’s trip to the Auditorium Theater to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. We are excited to report that we will be taking the Metra! Tickets have been purchased for everyone and it has been arranged for us to have our own train car. This was a highlight of our field trip last year and everything went very smoothly. Mr. Wilson’s, Ms. Gillespie’s and Ms. Johnson’s classes will also be taking the train. The performance begins at 11:00 a.m. and will last an hour. We will leave the classroom at 9:25 to walk to the 57th St. Metra station to catch the 9:53 train. The train will arrive at Van Buren station at 10:04. We will have time for a snack and a leisurely walk to the theater.
Following the performance, the plan is to walk to Millennium Park for lunch. If you work nearby, we invite you to join us for lunch! If it is rainy or too cold, or both, we will return to school on the 12:22 train from Van Buren station. We hope to make that decision on Friday morning before we leave. If the weather is in our favor we will have about an hour to eat a picnic lunch and to enjoy the interesting art and nature in the park. We will gather at “The Bean” at 1:00 to walk to the Millennium Station to catch the 1:20 train back to school. The train gets us to the 57th St. station at 1:36, well in advance of our regular afternoon dismissal. This is wonderful way for the children to experience the city and adds lots of memories of this field trip.
We are asking that you pack your child a picnic lunch (and bring one for yourself if you are a chaperone), including a drink that he or she can carry in a backpack. Do not forget to include snack as usual! The current forecast is for temperatures in the mid- 40’s and cloudy. Since we will be near the lake, dressing for cold, windy Chicago conditions is necessary.
The following children have a parent attending as a chaperone. Everyone should have been billed for the tickets ($12 each) through FACTS sometime in October.
