Insect Metamorphosis has been happening right before our eyes and we are learning so much! Overnight, another polyphemus moth emerged, mated with the female and she laid eggs all over the habitat. Before the end of the year, we will have lots of new little caterpillars to care for. Luckily, these moths eat lilac leaves and we will have an adequate supply from Scammons Playground.
It was too cold to release the painted lady butterflies last week because they can't fly unless it's 55 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer. They have been happily flying around their butterfly habitat, sipping on oranges and mating! The children has spotted dozens of tiny, blue-green eggs all over the netting. The eggs are about the size of a head of a pin. Ms. Harrison purchased some hollyhocks to feed the hungry caterpillars as soon as they hatch. Hopefully we will have enough food for the little eating machines! We plan to release the adult painted lady butterflies and the ladybugs early next week. Stay tuned...
FINAL KINDNESS MISSION

FINAL KINDNESS MISSION
For our final kindness mission with our Kindergarten Buddies in Ms. Stowe-Grant's class we are planning a fundraising event for the Ronald McDonald House at the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital. The Ronald McDonald Houses
provide a supportive residence for families while their child is being treated at a nearby hospital. Offering comfortable, private rooms where families can get a good night’s rest knowing their child is close by, our Houses give them the opportunity to connect with others going through similar experiences. In this ‘home away from home,’ parents can exchange stories over a cup of coffee in the kitchen while siblings bond with new friends in the play room. Volunteers arrive daily, offering their smiles, cleaning and cooking talents. Laundry and computer facilities provide accessibility and convenience. The folks who work at the House are always there, providing comfort and care to families during their greatest time of need.
For our fundraising event, we will have an in-school walk-a-thon to Promontory Point and back. On Thursday, we will walk with our buddies to The Point, enjoy a picnic lunch and walk back to school - a total of about 3 miles! Our goal is to raise $1000 for the Ronald McDonald House. To achieve that goal, we are asking our students to get sponsors for the walk. Attached you will find a pledge form and we ask that it and the donations be returned to school by June 10th. Checks can be made payable to the Ronald McDonald House. Please make sure your child has a picnic lunch with water bottle for Thursday and a small, lightweight backpack to carry it in. Your child should also wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. On June 6th, we will visit the Ronald McDonald House and make welcome cards for new families.

MILE RUN REMINDER
Soon the children will be running the mile in P.E. Please make sure your child comes to school Monday-Thursdays with appropriate shoes for running. Sandals (including Keens) do not provide adequate support or comfort.
BACKPACKS EVERYDAY
Please make sure your child has a backpack everyday until the end of the year. Projects, workbooks, and other schoolwork will start coming home slowly. Thanks.
FRIDAYS ARE PICNIC DAY
For the next two Fridays, we will have Picnic Day during our lunch time (weather permitting) from 11:30-12:15 in Scammons Playground. On these days, please do not send heat ups. Children can still bring lunch boxes and will be able to pick up their milk. If your child does not receive milk from school, please send a beverage. Children are welcome to bring beach towels to sit on. They can store them in their cubbies until the end of the year.
