Each morning, Ms. Harrison posts a new "Did You Know" Fact outside of the classroom. The facts encourage wonder and conversation. We encourage second graders to read the facts each morning and we encourage parents to ask about these facts at home. Learn something new everyday!
Our class, with over 1 million other students and teachers from all over the world, are celebrating Dot Day 2014! Dot Day was officially September 15th, but we will be celebrating all year. The Dot is a children's picture book by author/illustrator, Peter Reynolds. As described by Fablevision, The Dot tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Reynolds’ book, the teacher dares a very resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Encouraged by her teacher, she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, letting her creativity bloom and, ultimately, inspiring others. After reading this book, we began work on our own dots. This was also a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce the class iPads and how to use them responsibly. Using the app Drawing Pad, each child created his/her own unique dot. We then did some "app smashing" by taking those dots and exporting them into another app called Percolator. The original dots were magically transformed into another piece of artwork. They children chose their favorite dot, added their artist's signature and we posted them in the hallway for all to see. We also created a video sharing our process and pride! |
